An opportunity to chase a dream or continue to look for a full time job in my field of study?
-
I'm a recent graduate and currently looking for a full time employment in my field of study. BUT I am also very motivated to make my dreams of owning a bar happen. I now have an opportunity to get some experience in the bar business as a bartender and I would LOVE to take it. The problem is I don't want to flake on my boss after a few weeks/months if I should get the opportunity for a full-time job in my field of study since I still continue to apply for positions....I wouldn't know when I'll get that opportunity either so it makes sense that I take this bartending job right? I guess in the long run I could always work weekends and a full-time job on weekdays? If I take this bartending job, I will be balancing two jobs. Once I get my full-time position, I plan on quitting my cosmetician job and focusing on my full-time job and my bartending job. Just like to know your opinion on my approach. What would you do?

Answer:
Since you don't have any job, what is this drama all about? You said that if you had a job in your field of study, you'd quit for a bartending job. (do you know you have to train for this?It isn't just dumping stuff into glasses). Anyway, apply for all jobs. Get one. See if you get the 2nd one. If so, then decide what you want to do (part time/full time, whatever). Investigate what it would take to be qualified to be a bartender. Keep applying for jobs.Hope this helps.

I would take the more practical approach. Which jobs has a better growth potential. 20 years from now what would I be doing? If it's between cosmetology or bar-tending... I would say it's a toss. Does cosmetologist get paid a lot in your community? It's still a service job, just like bar-tending... They are very similar professions. If you eventually want to own your own bar.... the bar would give you more experience towards that goal.
