Try to find some internships in fields that might interest you. You and write and take pictures for local or community newspapers. Exposure and printed material is a valuable as money. Check with Civil Service Commission or your police department to see what the support jobs (forensic photography, fingerprinting, chemistry, etc) involve. See if you can shadow someone performing these jobs for a set period, a month or a summer. You'll figure out what you prefer fairly fast if you actually do parts of the job. You'll also find out what training you'll need for your area of interest. And if you can, get or keep yourself in the best physical shape you can manage.
