Is the dentist career hard to study?

What company/career would you recommend for a young adult with only a HS Diploma and Cashier Experience?

  • Thanks for taking the time to read my query. To generalize completely, I have lived in poverty my entire life. I am a 22 year old woman. I tried my best and did fairly well in school, working hard in high school to prepare for college. I achieved a composite score of 26 on the ACT and was accepted into a *decent* university. Due to my naïveté and lack of parental guidance I made poor decisions at a young age and unfortunately did not attend said university. Today I find myself with 7 years of experience as a cashier and shift manager working at fast food restaurants and gas stations. Within the past two years of my life, miraculously perhaps; I've developed into a person that I can truly be proud of. I don't steal. I never ask for help when I know that with patience, discipline and hard work I can help myself. I don't lie to people. I never borrow money, I'd rather live without. I treat people with respect as a general rule, unless they are truly indecent people who are trying to manipulate or harm me. What I'm getting at here is that I am extremely ethical because I want to be and I just don't care who is inconvenienced or bored by this fact. I am completely dissatisfied in my "industry" due to the type of people I find myself working around, all the drug and sex talk and whatnot. Kids dropping food utensils on the floor and reusing them without cleaning. I sear inside and loathe these things. I want to be a professional, ethical, hard working employee and/or be proud of what I am doing. I live in a very (in my opinion, at least) rural and uncouth area in Missouri and my job options are very limited, recession aside. As aforementioned above, I only have a high school diploma and very weak yet lengthy job experience for my age to offer employers. As for skills, I have strong written and verbal native English skills and my area of expertise is in computers. I can upgrade, repair and configure Windows, Apple and Linux systems. I have the uncommon gift of common sense, however, math beyond Algebra II is difficult for me hindering my ability to learn programming languages. I also have very little knowledge about networking outside of the knowledge required to set up home and school networks. I am great with basic math and have achieved competence as a cashier and as a shift manager in the fast food industry. I have been told that I have absolutely excellent customer handling skills and I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of watching a pissed off, tired, gloomy person walk into my workplace only to leave with a huge smile across their face. With that in mind, my teeth are decaying. My smile for the meantime is safe but a dentist visit brought to my attention that I need $13,000 worth of work done, which is $2,000 more than I gross in a year at my job. I am currently studying for an A+ Certification (at one time for the sole purpose of appearing more qualified for a Geek Squad position at Best Buy) and I am very actively seeking a better job or career. My truck is at best somewhat reliable, and I am afraid to work more than 30 miles from home. It is not uncommon for me to have to walk to work or hope my wonderful boyfriend can fix the truck in time or give me a ride to work. Without trying to sound too picky, I bore easily and cannot stand easy jobs. I want a mentally and/or physically demanding job. I need to work somewhere where not only is there room for growth, but actual mental growth is required and encouraged. My dream career is either in the IT field or in business, or a magical infusion of both. I have had three job interviews this year while maintaining my current fast food job. First was with Best Buy, where I received two interviews but never got the call for the third and final one. Second was a hotel for a housekeeper position. I figured I could study more if I wasn't so mentally and physically exasperated after long unrewarding hours at the fast food job where I am not afforded time to eat and use the restroom on most days. I was offered the job and put in my two weeks only to later find out that the hotel could only offer me 15 hours a week. I retained my fast food job but lost my position as manager and $1.50 an hour because of it. I recently had an interview that went well with Wal-Mart, however, I did not make it to the drug screening facility within 24 hours because I had to work at my McJob that day, in fact, I work six days a week and get less than 30 hours. In retrospect I should probably have quit that job and went to the facility. Unfortunately for myself I am painstakingly professional, having promised the store manager a two weeks notice, too ethical to "no call-no show." My options are severely limited as an uneducated female. I have an app pending with Radio Shack but I have read that they treat employees poorly and will fire you with lightning fast precision for not meeting sales quotas. I need dental benefits.
