Whats the best way to turn down a job offer?

Is there a way to turn down a job offer you've already accepted?

  • Need some life advice here.. I recently accepted a job offer (verbally and on paper, at-will employment), for a job that starts not for almost another month, and am already having some second thoughts. If I get offered something else by another company, is it entirely crazy to decide to back out of the first job I already accepted and accept something else? And if it's possible to do so, what would you use as an excuse so that your reputation isn't totally stained?

  • Answer:

To company #1: Your job offer is a great opportunity; however, after some serious introspection, I have determined that another person would be better suited for this position. My skill set and personality type just is not the best match for your company's culture. I am most appreciative that you have offered me this position, but to be fair to you, I cannot accept your offer at this time. Thank you. If you put the fault at a less than ideal fit, it should take the sting out your turning down their offer. You will sound like you also have their best interests in mind by refusing their offer.

If you didn't sign a contract agreement that states there is no backing out, then this is a free country and if you don't want to do it, you don't want to do it.
