What is intermediate machinery?

What is the maximum number of hours allowed to work on machinery?

  • Due to a recent change in structure to the business I am in, I will shortly be required to work shifts consisting of over 9 hours between 2 - 4 times a week (9 1/2 - 10 hours). I work on/in machinery my whole shift and from what I have been told it is illegal to work on machines for over 9 hours without consent and/or if there is no other option. I need this confirmed though before I can advance with an argument against the new shift pattern. I will be doing 5 shifts a week in total during the week with the rest ranging between 6 1/2 hours to 9 hours. Can anyone help me please? Thanks

  • Answer:

No restrictions. Except that you must be paid overtime if you work over 40 hrs/wk. But a 9 - 10 hour shift is not straight work time anyway. You do get break(s) and lunch time.

You don't say which province your in? Since most provinces labour laws are similar, I am sending you Ontario's Employment Act. You should find your answer plus a lot more info in there. I am also including a link to a page I strongly recommend you read. It discusses the effects of shift work and the fact that if said shift works cause you problems eg: inability to sleep due to disrupted sleep patterns, there is no recourse for you through Worker's Compensation. http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:2otKWyMReAgJ:www.gowlings.com/ohslaw/pdfs/AccPrev_MayJune03.pdf+ontario+laws+shift+work&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ca&client=firefox-a
