What does "third in charge" mean?

  • I'm applying to this retail clothes store, and the position is "third in charge" ...does that just mean that I'll be... third in charge? "We require an individual with the aspiration and ability to help our Management team coach and develop our sales team, focused on 100% customer service." Does it sound like I'd be doing a lot of training? This is my first job, do you think it's too early to apply? I mean, it says experience isn't necessary but... third in charge?

    Yes, it means that you will have two bosses and you will be third in the chain of command. If it says experience is not necessary, then you will NOT be training anyone.

"Third in charge" means you're only in charge of anything if the first two are absent. If you're "coaching a sales team" it means they hold you responsible for at least maintaining the sales level, if not to increase it. God help you if you don't continually show increases. Then again, if you DO show increases, eventually you'll have more "weight" to throw around with #1. Beware of #2, though, who will see you as a threat, because you're the one bringing in the bux, and he knows #1 will eventually start wondering why he needs a #2 if #3 is paying the bills. Unless of course, #2 is #1's son or daughter, in which case you can forget ever being #2, in which case you should start thinking of becoming a #1 yourself, by starting your own company. That's what I did.
