I have a trade qualification but I hated my job so I left, where can I find out what to do for work?
-
Hi, I left school halfway through Year 11, completed SC but not HSC. I completed a four year apprenticeship with BMW as a Service Technician (Mechanic). I enjoyed it at first but grew to hating it and despising it in the end. Well under appreciated industry and not paid enough. I decided to leave at the end of my apprenticeship and gain a forklift license to work in a factory/warehouse. Turns out $500 later (License) that people generally hire forklift drivers with experience only, and that I would have to start out on low wages as a pick/packer. Although that was frustrating, I didn't mind it. But now, I am completely lost in what I want to do. I'm 21 years old, been through depression before, have no major debts only major goals, but I honestly have NO IDEA what I want to do for work or WHERE I want to work. I don't get excited by reading any job advertisements, nothing gets me interested... I guess i'm asking what I could do to find out the perfect career for me? If anyone could help that would be great, thanks for your time!

There are career counselors and tests on line to help identify your personality traits and your aptitudes, but that may not be much help. If I understand you correctly, most jobs and careers start ok, but then you become bored or disenchanted. This may the dislike of a routine or finding that most jobs have a drudgery component. This is where you have to some real hard thinking to determine if it is the task or the environment that bores you. If it is the environment, perhaps working at one of the trades you already know in a small business where you do a little bit of everything would be for you. If it is the task, then you should try to identify something that holds your interest. You may start with what you think and daydream about most. There are exciting careers, but most are dangerous, and still have their dull moments.
