How to follow up after applying for a job?

Applying for a job via email: do i wait or follow up?

  • I sent my CV to a company through totaljobs.com and they sent me an email saying that they have sent it to the company but 'Totaljobs.com does not take part in the selection process; please contact the recruiter directly at __(email of company)_____ to follow up on your application.' Am i meant to wait for the company to reply or do i send an email myself? What would i say? :S

  • Answer:

It means that they have already sent your CV, and any further communications should go to the email given. I would wait a few days, so they have time to review it and look it over. Then about day 3-4, you can email them and ask if they received it (it's always good to confirm) and if there is anything else they need. You can also ask them when they will be making their decision.

Other answers

You should not send a follow up e-mail to the company. If they are interested in your resume, they will contact you. If they are not interested in your resume, they won't contact you. Most companies don't have time to answer hundreds of e-mails that say did you get my resume, are you considering me for the job, etc. Follow up is not necessary.
