How hard is an art director's job?

Can anyone help with my job application for an art technician?

  • I'm applying to be a full time art technician at a local college. My past education has been in art and design and I am a practicing freelance graphic designer. I want to move into the education sector as I fill it offers a more reliable income but I'm not sure I should be saying that on the form. I would like to progress to study a PGCE in art and design one day and the role would offer excellent experience for that, but since the role is permanent I do not want to hint that I might be leaving in a year or two. I did find that whilst studying my art and design courses the technicians help was invaluable as the teacher was often very rushed, and feel on some part at least, I owe my degree to their help and input. So the major obstacle on the application form of which I am struggling with most is the "Why do you want to work for us question?" Here are the job specs: Setting up lessons including photocopying • Monitoring and maintaining stock, equipment and resources • Technical support for ceramics, photography, printing, painting etc. • Planning and maintaining department displays Skills required: • Background in creative education and/or industry • IT proficient, ideally with both PC and MAC • Well organised, tidy and capable of managing your time efficiently • Good communicator with colleagues and pupils (aged 11-18) •Eye for detail My experience is as follows: Education Web Design Short Course BA (Hons) Graphic Design (therefore creative suite, microsoft, quark all on mac and PC) Foundation Diploma in Art and Design A Levels in Art, Design and Media 10 GCSE's A*- C including Art, Design, English, Maths.. Work Experience 1 year working as a freelance designer volunteer cafe assistant at homeless shelter design internship at london fashion producers design internship at independent music promoter sales assistant at clothes shop sales assistant at book shop sales assistant at supermarket 2 months independent travel/ backpacking: asia and australia Practicing artist and musician in spare time Any input highly appreciated. Thank you

  • Answer:

Well...just say that about the technician's at your college, I'm surprised that you're being considered without a C.E.F.E.T....you could mention that you intend to study for one of these in your spare time (they run in the evenings)..I'd dispute that the learning sector offers a more reliable income as the cuts are affecting this area heavily...my friend used to do the sort of job that you're applying for at our local college, even took a C.E.F.E.T. in the evenings, but has just been made redundant as there's no funding for art courses any more. Also....get a C.R.B. check and say that you love being in an artistic environment and long to teach one day
