Why do some internships require college credit?

  • I recently graduated with a degree in magazine journalism. I'm ready to get my foot in the door by any means necessary- even unpaid internships. So why, oh WHY, for so many (especially Conde Nast) is college credit a requirement? You would think that if they had the opportunity to get a college grad they would take it, right? Yet the application states "you MUST be able to receive college credit."

  • Answer:

There are restrictions on internships. They cannot have you working for them without payment unless you are doing this as part of your educational program. They'll run afoul of wage & hour laws unless they hire a student who gets course credit. It's a legal issue, and you have diddly to say about it. A degree in magazine journalism? But what is your area of expertise? How can you expect to write, edit, etc, on a topic or field if you know nothing about it? If you want to be a financial writer, you need to know finance. If you want to write about health, you need an appropriate degree in the health field. If you want to write about fashion, you need to know fashion design or fashion biz. You need an area of expertise!
