Doing jobs under your qualifications?
-
I have computer science and life science university degree. I recently changed from permanent job at a small company to a 1 year contract temp job in the government. I don't like my current job because I do data entry and I deliver CDs to the tester, do filing and scan things into the computer. I am frustrated because I don't know if this is worth my time, my goal is to work as an analyst in the government so I am hopping this would be a stepping stone to an analyst position in the government since a lot of jobs are posted internally. I am not worried about getting permanent since my manager said on the first day that he can use my programming skills but since my current position is admin assistant so he cannot give me programming job. Analyst positions (the type I want) rarely have an opening in government department I am in, apparently 2 weeks before I started the job someone said they were hiring a Business Analyst person which is what I am studying now. Anyways I have been thinking should I do Master's degree. My parents kinna depend on me for money so I cannot quit a full time job to study full time. I was thinking of next year if I do get permanent I would have company pay for my education and I would study master's part time. I just don't know what to do. Should I quit government job and work elsewhere or just bite the bullet and hope everything works out next year.

Answer:
If you think you can find the other job, go for it and you did said your parents depend on your income, and have you ever think of studying on-line, may be you can work and study in the same time, this is suggestion, but that would help you keep your job but in same time looking for a better one and support yourself in future study or as you said this job is a step stone, hope this can help.

It's for you to do what you're most comfortable with, but here are my thoughts. Since you are coming to the end of the contract, you may want to look for a permanent job outside that is perhaps more challenging. If something comes up with the government, you now have experience with them, and didn't leave on bad terms (your contract was up). If nothing comes up in the short term, you're in a better job and are building your resume. I wouldn't bother with the Master's until you get a BA job.
