What career should I go into with a business degree?

Don't know whether to go to University or not. I am really undecided on a career path, any advice?

  • Okay, so I'm not your conventional 18 year old student, instead I'm a 23 year old guy and I really, desperately want to change my life and get a career, but I really don't know what I want to do. I am pretty bad at maths, so that kind of rules out a lot of things. I would like to study something to do with current affairs, poverty, different cultures etc, so was thinking of a degree in International Relations. I just don't know what I want to do, so any advice you could give me? I really can't see myself doing a business or marketing degree, as I'm really not interested in them areas. Also, I wouldn't mind running my own business, maybe a gym or something, but then I don't particularly need a degree in how to run a business. I could go and learn about business at a local college if I wanted to, so that isn't a massive deal. I want to be successful but, what do I do? I don't even know what degree or career path I want to go down, so any advice?

  • Answer:

Don't go to University unless your absolutely sure on what you want to do. There are hundreds of stories of youngsters coming out of Uni with degrees and working in Tesco's because they were unable to get a job ! Plus you'll have a huge debt. Try to get some work experience of the things you like doing volunteer to go to a poverty stricken country so you can learn about your different cultures etc charities like the Red Cross Oxfam will be able to help you. Try to get some experience of what you want to do before studying everyone has to start from the bottom and work their way up that way you'll get experts help and may even get a mentor. At your age no one really knows what they want to do but its trial and error and you are still young enough to change your mind.

Maybe look into the Open University (OU). You can more or less study at degree level but at your own pace. This would give you time to explore the subjects you have chosen whilst still working and if you change your mind throughout it is not a problem.

i feel like im trying to push my lifestyle on you, but this is only a suggestion. i am taking environmental science classes in school. i dont know the exact sort of job i want, but i think a career in the environmental field will be extremely rewarding because i am an environmental-hippie-tree-hugger type, but also because even if i dont particularily enjoy my job, atleast it is helping the planet. the courses are a lot of hands on. we even get to go for lots of hikes. my professors compared invasive plant species to humans invading planet earth, we watched videos about all the different products made from pigs (toast, soap, butter, paint brushes, etc) i have learned a lot of very interesting stuff! there is a math class, but it is very basic. i myself hate math and stink at it... good luck deciding something!

"I would like to study something to do with current affairs, poverty, different cultures..." I don't know if you're American or not, but if so I would highly recommend looking into AmeriCorps. It's a year-long term of national service where you help underserved communities and do things like fight poverty, community building and helping people from different cultures. Many positions don't require a degree and when you complete your service you get over $5k to put toward student loans/college tuition. It could be a great way to get a more focused idea of what you want to study and discover what your strengths and weaknesses are. Plus it would look awesome on your college application.
