How to ask professors to network for jobs?

Finding a job without a network?

  • I'm out of school now for only 9 months, and I was lucky to find a job only a month after graduation. However, that company has recently laid off all it's junior staff in my area, so I'm out the door soon. A few of the senior staff are going too. Here is my problem: during the time I was with them I was in training, and the few people I'd consider to be in my network are either still with the company or taking jobs elsewhere that require certifications. I have written recommendations from my boss and his boss, but everyone they know who is hiring wants more experience than what I have. I tried reaching back to school and talking with some professors but they they honestly don't seem to remember me, and at this point I'd just be annoying them. So! I have no one in my network that can help but I have recommendations, and I don't have enough experience for some employers but I am no longer an inexperienced hire so I'm haven't seen a response from anyone offering internships or true entry level jobs that do not require experience. And what is with listing a job as "entry level" but wanting 3 years experience in that same field anyway? I guess what I'm asking is what should I do? I've heard "network" but honestly I'm on no one's party list and again, those in my network don't have anything to offer by their own admission.

  • Answer:

Well without any information as to what field it is that your trying to get in there isn't a really specific amount that anyone will be able to help you. The best thing to do is put your application in even if it asks for a couple more years of experience. Maybe getting in with a company that you would like to work in your field for by taking a job that doesn't really have anything to do with career and then moving up in the company to your career field.
