What are some career examples for a finance/accounting major that does not want to work in Corporate America?
-
Just for some background...After high school, I went in to my university knowing that I would have to pick a financially-viable degree to support my parents after graduation. (I personally and honestly don't care about a huge salary for my own sake) Under any other circumstances, I would have chosen to follow my passion for the arts. So now i am a 2nd semester sophomore business student looking towards finance/accounting. Anyways, I am the type of person that can never envision oneself working in corporate America but i would like financial stability (to support my parents after graduation), I'm just curious if anyone has any advice or career examples for a finance/accounting major that's not working in such a structured corporate-americanesque job (that finance/accounting majors seem to be doomed for) thank you

Answer:
Well, you don't necessarily have to work in a huge corporation that you are envisioning. You could work in the government with a degree like than, but it wouldn't be much different tbh. There are however, many small businesses looking for skills that you have. The thing about being in the financial sector is that there are jobs in almost anything that can make some money. You can work in the arts sector, doing finance or accounting or whatever. Just remember there are small business too. Although it might pay a little better, you don't need to work in a huge accounting firm.

A friend of a friend is an engineer and his wife is a doctor. They made a sizeable combined income but got tired of the daily grind. They opened a chicken farm. A company brings them thousands of baby chicks and weekly shipments of food, and all they do is feed the chickens. Then after a few months the company comes back and picks up the chickens and takes them off to the slaughter house, leaving a fat paycheck behind, so my friend tells me. He says they are able to maintain the same lifestyle as before.
