Would i be able to pursue a career in accounting ?
-
Hey, so im 16 and in grade 11, i got to thinking and realized that i want to be an accountant after high school . Just its A lot of math and i didn't know if i can do it. This year i took Geometry & Applications, that you need to graduate and i am going into my exam with an 82. Next i have Functions & Relations, then next year i am going to take Trigonometry and 3 Space, and Advanced math with an Intro to Calculus, math has never been my strong subject, but if i try really hard then i know i can pass. But honestly how much math & what type of math do you use when accounting ? and is the math in University courses for accounting really hard ? I also want to take an Accounting course, and economics course, Business organization & management, computer science and entrepreneurship, and possibly law, do you suggest taking this courses ? and which ones ?, also i was planning on moving to Vancouver, do you think i would have a good income and make enough money if i become an Accountant? Thanks

Answer:
Contrary to popular belief, accounting is NOT a lot of math. You work with numbers, but not that much with complex math. 95% of the math we use is actually simple addition, subtraction, division, multiplication and VERY basic algebra. I have NEVER used trig, advanced algebra, calculus...and I work in Finance for a Fortune 50 company. When you get to the University level, you will not have much of a choice as to the courses you need to take....those are chosen for you when you declare a major. As for Vancouver, that is one of the most expensive cities in North America. The average house is about $450,000 and you will NOT make enough money right out of the University to afford to buy a home. In fact, you might have a VERY hard time 5-10 years after you graduate.

accounting courses require mostly simple math, ie, plus, minus, multiply and divide, and i only took one higher math (calculus) at university. The same for the CA courses. CA in vancourver makes higher than average income in vancouver
