What should my resume include?

What is best to include/not include on my resume when I've only had one job out of college?

  • I'm moving with my wife to a new city so I need to revamp my resume to get a new job. My previous resume had a "recent grad" feel to it since I had no professional experience. However, that was over 3 years ago and I've only had that one job. I feel like college info like GPA and extracurriculars are not really relevant anymore so what should I include this time around? Do you recommend going straight to the work history or should I do something like a mission statement (kind of old fashioned, but might still work?). Should I end with skills or something else? You're advice is much appreciated!

  • Answer:

Include what you normally would, name, contact information etc. Do some research as to where you want to apply and address the resume to them to make it look like you've given it a lot of thought and you aren't just passing out resumes. Include an objective using the company's name. Include education, work experience, volunteer work, skills, and list that references are available upon request. Everything else that they might be interested is always listed in their application. (Most companies still ask for GPA, I saw it in a recent application of mine.) Good luck!

it's been barely three years. I don't see a harm in that. especially when the three years you have spent is in that one job. it's ok.

Personally I would just re-arrange your resume. Since your not a recent grad anymore your education is slightly less important than your work history. Just move the work history above the education on the resume.
