Am i going to get fired?
-
I've been working at a small, family owned restaurant for about 3 months now. I am a cook, i love cooking, and i really love my job. I'm only 16 and this is my second job but so far i've been doing really well. The other cooks i work with always compliment on my style and technique and say they are really impressed with how i am doing! Within the first month i got really sick and missed a sunday shift, so I called in and they got someone to cover for me. The second month i injured my foot. I hate cuts all up and down it and my whole ankle was swelled up. I got a doctors note yet i, once again, missed a sunday shift. Just last weekend a co-worker asked me if i would be able to cover half of her shift on sunday because she has "back pains"... she asks me to cover her shifts ALL the time and i pretty much always do. I told her i'd take it if i was able to. My family ended up going out of town the next day and i was out of service and couldn't get a hold of her to let her know i couldn't make it. She had written down on the schedule that i was going to take her shift. Apparently she just left when i didn't show up to take her shift and called in and asked one of the head cooks (who really doesn't like me) to come in because i "didn't know show up". I told her i might not be able to and she made it seem like i was going to for sure. I explained what happened and everything... One of my friends told me that they were all talking about me the next morning and how i should be fired and they don't want me working there... What do you know, the next schedule comes out and my hours are cut in half. Usually i work 37 hours in 2 weeks. This week i work 20. I always do my work perfectly and i have only ever been talked to once, and that was when i first started. My hours are being cut back and i'm really nervous about being fired. I love my job so much and i don't want to loose it. I've been working really lately to show them that they shouldn't let go of me... but idk, i just don't know what to think and i'm really stressed out. Do you think i'm going to get fired?

Answer:
Do not stress yourself about this situation, cutting your hours may only be a way to allow you more space. If there is always someone asking you to cover their shift, then you will pick up the extra hours if necessary. Fired? That sounds a little far fetched. Your employer may be just sending you a signal and it sounds like you got the message. Continue to keep your work up to par, you will be alright.

Your 16, so I will make this as clear as i can. Your hours have been cut as you are coming across as unreliable. Stop calling in sick, unless you can't get out of bed, and learn to say NO. Speak to your manager. explain that you did not mean to come across this way, and be honest about how you are feeling.
How did your family going out of town interfere with honoring your commitment to cover the shift? Would you really expect someone suffering back pains to hang around in the vain hope that you would finally show up? You expect sympathy when you have medical problem but apparently you have no sympathy for others
