What is the best way to look for a job when you don't know what kind of a job you are looking for?

• I was recently laid off from my job of 3 years and am completely overwhelmed by the job market. First of all, my last job was the first one I had out of college and I did not have a spectacular record there, nor do I want to go back to doing a similar job (I worked in TV). The skills I gained there are very specific to the job and not particularly transferable. I have no professional network because I have trouble developing social connections. I don't know what I'd be good at or what I'd like to do and the low end jobs (like retail and the like) don't pay enough for me to continue paying my bills. So, how do you find a job and get an interview when you are under qualified for any meaningful work, can't afford to go back to school, and have proven yourself to be a weak employee?

  Gabriel, you don't have to work FOR someone. Work for yourself. Try sitting down with pad and pencil and list all the things you like to do no matter how silly they seem to you. Then see if any of these might pay something. Maybe you like a clean home. Hey, a house cleaner here pulls in $100+ a day. Be a social planner and gopher for busy executives. Run errands, remind them of important dates ( like their anniversary ). There are folks doing this for dozens of clients and making good money. The point is, a person who enjoys his/her work generally makes a success of it in the business world. Take a low pay entry level job while developing your own business. Between the two work ethics you might make ends meet financially while developing your future in business. I just want to mention to be careful of the internet ads. Most are scams to get your money. Always remember that you are not worthless. Maybe under qualified for a lot of positions, but who isn't ? The only losers in life are those who quit.
