How did you get your job as a restaurant manager?

How do I get my Manager to Co-operate?

  • I work at a grocery store getting 24 hours a week, I've been there for almost 4 years. I'm a part timer, and because of our Union, I can't get more than 24 hours like I used to. We have in total 11 People for our department. So recently I got a new job at a restaurant and I work there only evenings once a week (tuesdays only- and luckily for me I am rarely schdueled for tuesdays for my grocery store job) But there is that occassional tuesday where I am, and must give those hours away. I made the mistake to be honest with my manager and told her, she then gave me a stern look and asked "why?" I told her I needed the extra money and asked her what days were best for her to schedule me in so she doesn't have to work around my new job. She wasn't very helpful and said she didn't want to give me a fixed schedule. Then I obtained from a co-worker at the grocery store the occasional job at a banquet hall every random Saturday. I was able to go because it never conflicted my schedule at the grocery store. Until this past Saturday where I had told my manager I was going to the doctors because of stomach pain and was unable to work my evening shift 5-9, I told her this because I made more than $100 dollars cash at the banquet hall that same night. if I worked the grocery store I would only get $35 dollars because of taxes. I told her this because I didn't want her to blame the co-worker who got me the job (which I am inlove with... Banquet halls are the best) telling her "Why are you taking my workers? blah blah" if she found out I was working in a banquet hall she would get upset like she did with my other restaurant job and try to force her to stop taking me to the Banquet hall. But someone did tell her I worked with my coworker at a Banquet hall and she knew I was lying but couldn't prove it. but someone saw me with my coworker and that's how my Manager found out I was lying. She told me I was not allowed to have another job, and I had till September to choose where I wanted to work. I've called my Union and he gave me advise as to how to proceed, but I know she'll make it difficult for me, I want to go to the owner of the store and talk to him, but I feel he doesn't like me very much, so I'm not sure if he'll help me out or not... I don't know what to do. I want to keep this job, but also make money on the side with my restaurant and Banquet hall jobs, How can I do this? How do I make her cooperate?

  • Answer:

Most employers do not allow you to work elsewhere. They want you available for them.

Very difficult and very complex situation. Your best bet is to find employment other than the grocery store. If there is someone above the discussed manager, it may be best to speak with him/her regarding your situation. They may be able to help. Good luck.

If you need to be working more than 24 hours/week, and you are seeking other work because you can't make your bills, there is nothing wrong with that. However, it's not the job of the company you work for to accommodate your schedule, or as you say, "cooperate". You state you are part of a union. And if that's the case, then you should consider talking to your shop steward or rep. to find out what how you either: A. get more hours so you don't have to work another job or; B. get more flexibility so you can get another job on the side. Or, you should find a primary job that pays you more, and quit the job you have.
