How should I ask for a job application?

Never had a job, how do I ask for an application?

  • I'm nervous about introducing myself, I mean do I enter the store and ask to speak directly to the manager? and if he comes should I tell him my name and start talking about my qualifications? if i get the application handed to me is it ok if i bring it back the next day or fill it at that exact moment?

  • Answer:

Yes, ask to speak to the manager, if not present, then just ask for an application. If the manager is there ask if they have any open positions. If you want to talk about your qualifications, ask if the manager has a few minutes as a consideration (may be busy) Yes, it is ok to take the application home and fill it out. I recommend that you make a copy of it so that if you need to fill out another application you will have the info handy.

You don't have to go to the manager.....it's not something that's necessary although if you want to you can....there's something called the Equal Opportunity Act....I think...meaning they have to give everyone the same opportunity for the job, so they to go through all the applications anyway. Sometimes the managers come to the front and work, but I would just walk up to whoever's up front and say, "Can I please get an application?" If they say they aren't hiring say, "that's okay I'd still like to put one in." Some people fill there's out there some people take them home. It's whatever you're comfortable with. You have to write down references....you know....people who can vouch for you and say you're a hard worker and your honest....blah blah blah. If you don't take that information in with you you're gonna have to get it to take in with you or yes fill it out at home. Before you write down references.......make sure you ASK their permission in case they feel they don't want to. Don't list anyone from your family...it might just asks for others you've been close to or previous employers maybe. This is definitely not a step to worry about. Hopefully you'll get a callback for an interview! When that happens....breathe think about what you're gonna say and know your limitations before you go in, in case they have the preferred hours already in mind. If you can't and don't want to do it....just say thank you for giving me an interview, but I don't feel the position is right for me. Hope this helps.

Congrats on entering the work force :) Go ahead and tell the teller/cashier, etc. that you're interested in applying, they will direct you to either a website (where you will apply online), a paper form (take it home, fill it out, and return it to whomever they told you to), or the manager who will give you the form. Always introduce yourself, first and last name and shake the hand of the person. Be sure to make good eye contact and smile sincerely. Be enthusiastic but you don't have to start spouting out your qualifications just yet. If appropriate, give your resume when asked. Thank everyone you speak to for their time, even if you don't get what you want from them, you never know how small the world is, and being nice will get you far. Always be dressed as if you already work there, meaning~ Take out piercings and cover tatoos (unless you're working in a tat shop), keep hair appropriately groomed, and if it's a casual job like a restaurant or general store, dress in khakis and a polo/button up shirt. If it's something a bit more professional, try the khakis with a button up and tie. Be sure to ALWAYS wear a belt and keep your shoes in good order, no tennis shoes please. The tip on dressing appropriately will help you out immensely, because managers will sometimes interview on the spot when you inquire about a position. Best of Luck! Irene

just approach any clerk in the store and ask if they know if the store is hiring...regardless of their answer, ask if they know where you can pick up an application...( it may ne online). If they direct you to the manager or personnel office, just go in, be friendly, and ask for an ap. Usually they just hand you one and when you bring it back is your call,
