When is a person technically hired?

Should I tell the person that just hired me to volunteer that I am also looking for full-time work?

  • I was just hired to volunteer for a few hours per week in a field that I would like to gain more experience in. I am almost graduating and am also applying for ft paid positions. Should I mention this to the person who accepted me before accepting the position? I don't want to appear that I am taking the volunteer opportunity for granted, especially since I would be interested in working there and I have applied for paid positions there. The other option is that I say nothing but then if I am accepted for a position it could be awkward. Thanks!

There is always a saying that', Honesty is the best policy. There is nothing wrong in telling the truth. Though, you have to wait for the right time. Show your best while doing the job, to the highest level. Show your employer that you are good at what you are doing, learning all the aspects and most especially, you are enjoying it. Then, when the right time comes, say... middle or week before finishing the contract... take the chance to speak with your boss and tell him that you really like this job and your wish to continue if there is any possibilities, if not now maybe in the future or if he knows any other friends where he could recommend you, you will appreciate if very much. Be always open to what you feel. Goodluck...

Most Volunteer Coordinators I have worked with understand that you need a paying position at some point, unless you are independently wealthy, retired, or are just passing time. To tell them or not is up to you. If they don't understand that you are looking for a paid position, they probably shouldn't be in the job they are in. If you feel better about telling them as you approach graduation, feel free. If they don't understand, they are if for some rude shocks down the line.

When are you graduating? I think I would just do the volunteer thing and do not tell them anything yet. as you approah graduation and if the volunteer place is appealing let them know then. They probably already know you will be looking for a job when you graduate. Just start the volunteer thing and see how it goes. good luck!
