Where can I get free sales training?

Employer doesnt give me any training after 2 months still?

  • Ok first of all this is kind of long but I need to get it out of my system! I got a job in a famous Uk supermarket that begins with the letter M. Anyway I work in the Cafe area. When I applied for the job the title was sales assistant and I was to work on the till where people order the food and drinks and to clear the tables when I wasnt busy. When I arrived for my first day the Cafe Manager & Supervisor was off sick as he had been in an accident a week earlier and was in hospital. There was a second supervisor there but she was quite young and ovbiously inexperienced in training new employees. (During my interview I asked what training I was too be given the man who interviewed me said I would be given a 'buddy' for the first week that would follow me everywhere and was fully trained him/herself). On my first day the supervisor put me in the washroom where I stacked the dishwasher all day long and nothing else. The supervisor then left after 2 hours to go home and she wasnt actually supposed to work that day and was quite bothered about being there. On my next day the supervisor was not there at all (I work the evening shift and she is gone home before I arrive) as I only knew how to 'dishwash' the other staff decided I did that again. This continued for about 2 weeks exactly the same. I never ever saw a supervisor and the staff didn't know what to do with me. Then one night someone was off sick. There was three members of staff including me. One person is meant to cook one is meant to work the till and one is meant to clear tables and dishwash (which i always did) and the other is meant to work on the hotplate dishing the food onto the plates. Since one person was missing I had to do something new. Now the oher 2 staff were very rude about it when I said I did not know how to do anything else. It was a very busy night and the queue was getting longer - So they put me on the till. I didn't know the menu or anything but the customers were very nice to me and I worked out how to use the complicated touch screen till by myself (I have 10 years experience of using tills) although I was very slow at finding the options. The staff then kept complaining that I was letting people order the wrong stuff and I kept having to go over to tables and explain they had to change it ect. This was very embarrassing. This kept happening a few nights after that - I was put on the hot plate dishing up food - but I kept putting wrong amounts of chips on ect and the other staff there kept pointing it out to me but not in a way as to help me but more in a way that they were disgusted I did it wrong. A few days later I actually worked a same shift as the young supervisor again, she put me in the dishwash room again. I explained to her I had no training yet but she said the other staff should have shown me how to do it all since I'd been there a month. The truth is that the cafe is so busy and understaffed that the other staff had had the.. 'it is quicker if I do it myself rather than teach you how to do it' attitude. Another month has passed now and I am fluent (due to own teaching) on the till but I still have no idea how to cook or serve. The main supervisor is back but he goes on the till now only because of his injuries means he can't do much this means I am pushed into the washroom. I've only seen him once and he didn't offer me any training nor seem to care that I couldn't do most stuff. I am really annoyed and looking for a new job now. Is this the right way to treat new staff / can I complain to higher people? (The Cafe has had an inspector in a few times since I've been there and she was never happy with the results she saw we got bad results) I have seen the inspector more times than I've seen my boss...

i totally agree with you that you need something more motivating, something can really put to use your skills and intelligence. however in this credit crunch period, it is hard to find. so, why not just stay in the job you have got and try to use it as a first step to move to somewhere better, the place you work in, is a great place to meet people, make3 contacts, and show off your skills. hay you need to watch some youtube clips and you will be just 10 out of 10 in customer service, and that will be the start good luck

Maybe your employer thinks you are very good, you don't need training.

I have gone through what you have last september in marks and spencer. The first day I turned up for duty I was told I was too early and basically the supervisor was rude and dismissive of me. I left sent back my uniform and verbally expressed my disdain of their inappropriate training methods and wrote a letter to them also. Not all supermarkets are like this, like you I have worked in many but unfortunately some are rank bad.Marks and spencer and Tesco are terrible. Sainsburys are to be credited with their staff training it is superb and I would advise that you try for employment there. Sorry to hear what you have gone through because you are a good sound worker but retail is always understaffed. x
