Tips to succeed in an interview.

Can anyone give me any advice for a third interview as a design assistant?

  • So I went to the first interview and got on well with the team, got invited to a work trial to do a day on the job and managed to relax enough to be myself and get to this final stage. Seems the company can't decide so have got me in for a third interview up against two others. So I have just a 1 in 3 chance of getting the job, which is encouraging but still scary. I will be meeting with the managing director this time. Sadly, I've had two years of this since I left university, always making it to the very last stage but being passed over there, so I'm not always the most confident. The firm is a small tshirt printers with a shop and their own on site printing facilities. The job involves design, admin and customer facing work. All of which I have done before but I have not worked in a printers before and unsure as to the whole process, I have done some research into screen printing etc but am unsure how to get that research into conversation? I'd like to know what sort of questions he'll ask at this stage and any tips for how to really stand out and show enthusiasm. To explain what I can add to this company. I currently work in a bar and carry out design work on a freelance basis. I am a fast learner, and I am stubborn to succeed (I've been interviewed for this job before, but I got knocked out at stage one!). Thanks in advance

Two things you should plan to do - the first is you must have an effective summary of why you believe you'll be the best for this position, write it out if you need to and then boil it down to 3-4 sentences, or as brief and to the point as is possible. The second thing you should do, is try to figure out how you can add EXTRA value to the proposition of hiring YOU. Most folks want a job, some folks want to start a career in the field you've chosen, others see ways to add value like knowing groups or organizations that might utilize this company's services. If you can indicate the ability and/or interest in bringing them new business, then that's another feather in your argument. Or if you can demonstrate interest in advancing within the business, WITHOUT sounding like you're not really interested in the position that they're offering, then that should also be helpful. As for enthusiasm, there's no substitute. If you want to be enthusiastic, ACT enthusiastic - h/t Zig Ziglar
