Does applying online ever lead to jobs?
-
Obviously it leads to a job sometimes, but I've been applying online to different retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses for weeks and not one has called me. Not even Mcdonalds! Most of the places I applied to are hiring. I have work experience, open availability (taking semester off from college) and put together a solid resume too, the only downside is that I only have 1 professional reference. So, is applying in person better? It is just more time consuming and wastes a lot of gas, especially if it leads to no jobs. Plus I never know what to say to the manager and come across as awkward, but I am actually a good, dependable worker. Any other tips for getting a job, even at Mcdonalds or something? Thanks for your answers.

Answer:
Typically, for little retail jobs, if they accept applications in person, it's best to go in person. I would suggest stopping by the places you applied to during the middle of the day dressed nicely. If you can see they aren't busy, ask the cashier to talk to the manager. Say, "Hello, my name is Sam and I applied a few weeks ago for the [position] online and I just wanted to check in with you. I am very interested in working with you at [store name]."

Even if you try to apply in person, most large organizations will now tell you to go home and apply online. Recruitment decisions are made centrally these days, not locally

Clean up anything in facebook, myspace, twitter, etc. Employers will google your name, and pictures of you partying will not help. Also get a resume together so you can attach it with your applications. No matter how short, it makes an impression.

Worked for me, I got my current position via Monster.com. They "found" me on there, and offered me a position. But that could just be luck!

If you're just sending out your application cold, then they will not reply. If you're sending out your information from a generic email address, then it won't get past the SPAM filters. Assuming you're applying from a bona fide email address and there is a bona fide vacancy, you need to know whether you're applying to an agency or to the company itself. Agencies trawl through literally thousands of CVs and use software to do it. This software will match potential hits against the job specification, so throw in phrases like 'retail experience' or 'customer service' even if you have none and provide none! If you're applying to the company itself, you need to know whether your application will go to some far-flung centralised recruitment house (a shared service centre) or go to the store itself (the email address you send it to should tell you). The shared service centre staff will at least look at it, but because they're so overworked and generally underpaid, unless it ticks their boxes it will be sifted out. Ticking their boxes means making it easy for them to do their jobs - line 1 paragraph 1, let them know your availability with something like 'available for immediate start in Outer Mongolia'. If you go direct to the store, then it should be easy to get a response as long as your resume is not absurd. Do a little bit of homework and maximise your chances. Too many people take the lazy approach and send out 500 generic CVs online and are wasting everyone's time. Just a little thought can get you ahead of the pack. Good luck.
