How would I respond to this job interview question?

In a job interview, how would you respond to this question: How long are willing to work for us?

  • I used to say at least a year, but now I say indefinitely.

  • Answer:

    I always say "as long as you need me/ it takes"

It really depends on the position and the company. I would say something about opportunities for advancement.

No one is going to belief that you are going to dedicate the rest of your life to their company. By saying that, you look more like you are willing to say anything and that means nothing. That being said, one year is usually not a good length of time for retention, I would imagine a better answer would be between 2 to 5 years, depending on the type of job and level of training/experience required. I would respond by asking what length of commitment they are looking for, and then see if that meets the truth about what I am comfortable in promising.
