Future Career Advice please?!?
-
Hi, I am in a state of confusion as to how to start my career and would appreciate sensible advice. I have graduated from UC Irvine where I double majored in Political Science and International Studies. I graduated in 2001, but only now that I am starting to look for a job. I am turning 29 now and in a state of confusion for my future path/career. I do want a meaningful and good career, but not sure which path to choose. My majors are not really specific like engineering, accounting, medicine, so perhaps this is why I feel that I made a mistake in what I chose as majors. I wish i could go back and change things to at least economics or something. I have no idea how to use my majors because I live in Orange County, CA so there are no governmental jobs here when compared with DC. I am not looking to move either. I feel like my only option is to go into administrative jobs, which pay ****! I don't know....maybe Craigslist isn't the best place to look for jobs? I wish i was talented in something specific or master a skill some kind.....I feel useless in a way although i do have good software skills, but I do not know what field to choose for myself because everyone wants some type of a skill, but I was not taught any skills for choosing social sciences major. I hope I won't be stuck doing a $10/hr clerical job after graduating with double majors from one of the best unis....I guess this is what I am scared of! I am thinking about also going to community college to obtain a certificate in something to at least boost my 'productivity'. I also thought about becoming a Paralegal, BUT then I read how the legal field has long been dried up in the country for having way to many people. Same with nursing....totally opposite of my majors, but I even though about going that direction until i read that all the prognosis as to what a growing field nursing is.it is all a lie as so many nurses can't find work without an experience. Any advice?

Answer:
I started in hotel sales and catering. It's fun, it can be glamorous, you advance fast, and you can travel......Start entry level selling blocks of guestrooms, meeting and banquet space, and the hotels services and amentieis to meeting and event planners. Each hotel has 1-10 or more sales people. you advance quickly, and many advance to the lucrative General Manager spot. Start with an online certificate at ahla. or www.aprinda.com My best year was about 187 thousand as a regional director of sales. But I started entry level at 40K........a while back though.
