Advice needed on career?
-
I am a recent college graduate with a degree in sociology. During the past year, I have become very interested in school guidance counseling. I had several opportunities to shadow both high school and college career counselors/guidance counselors which solidified my interest in the career. I applied and have gotten accepted into four Master's of School Guidance Programs to start this coming Fall 09, all of which are two year programs. However, my husband is studying and preparing to take his DAT's to get into dental school for next Fall 2010. He is going to apply to all the schools that I applied to for school guidance counseling. The questions are: Should I defer my acceptance to all the colleges and wait to see where my husband goes or should I start this fall and hope that he gets into my school or a nearby dental school. If not, I will have to transfer and this would be tough. Also, is it illegal to defer to all 4 schools? Is deferment like a contract? Furthermore, I've been getting bad feedback about careers in education recently from family and friends. They are telling me that a career in guidance counseling is not recession proof and I may not get a job upon graduation or not in the area where my husband will be going to dental school. Instead, they are suggesting that I do a practical career that is recession proof like NURSING. They say that my personality would be compatible with the career and I have most of the prerequisites to get into an accelerated Bachelor's of Nursing and then onto a Master's of Nursing to specialize in something like Midwivery or even becoming a nursing instructor. I have not done any shadowing and do not like GORE so I don't know if this career would be a good fit for me. What is a nursing career with lots of automoy and not so much gore/emergency room experience, etc.?

Answer:
school nurse, nurse at a dr's office ( you might still see some "gore" lol), you could get into the office type jobs of nursing, like recruiting, director of nursing, but honestly if you're not interested then don't do it because nursing also takes passion.
