Employers are, like most all of us, interested most in what is in it for them. They want to hire people who solve their problems. A cover letter is a very brief brochure or advertisement about you. Advertising focuses on the recipient or reader. When cover letters eliminate or minimize use of the word "I" by replacing with the word "you" they have proved to get far better results (interviews!) Here is an example of your cover letter with reader focus: Get the name of someone to address this to if at all possible. Dear _____________ Your exciting opportunity for the Banner's Hallmark sale associate position has come to my attention. Never in my life have I seen a job description so tantamount to my skills. Please find the enclosed resume that verifies accomplished computer skills, developed communication skills, and a natural ability to work with my hands. Let's meet so I can learn your needs and goals and we can discover how my skills can serve you. Sincerely, Your Name (555)-555-8148 PS As persistence is one of my valued attributes, you will receive a follow up letter from me within five business days if I have not heard from you.

Your cover letter is a little lacking in any signs of life. Of Course you "feel like" your skills are just what they're looking for, and I'm impressed that you are capable of working with your hands! That's' inspiring me with great confidence. Sorry, those few paragraphs are not enough for me to call you by phone and ask you to come in for an in person interview. to inquire about a position as a_________________ in Banner's Hallmark. I feel that my skills and experience. use as 2nd paragraph. Loose the part where you put I am capable of working with your hands and wanting work for a yr. You can discuss your availability after you get the job also. I hope this helps you and Good Luck.

The cover letter is fine but I think you are taking the wrong approach if this is a retail store you are interested in going to work for. If you know they are hiring I would go over there first thing in the morning and ask to speak to the owner and tell them you really are interest in the position they have available. Unless they ran an add that said send resume and even then I would had deliver the resume with the cover letter. I that is what they asked for. If they did not run an add or you are not sure if they have an opening I would go over to the store on Tuesday. (Saturday to busy not a good time to go) speak to owner or manager and ask them how you would get a job working in their store.
