What job should I have?

Low-balling job offer -- what should I do?

  • I don't know what to do. I left my last job because I had a bad contract (no benefits, healthcare). I don't like my current job (I have healthcrae but it's not very good), so I applied for a permanent contract with my last job once it was actually advertised. I was offered the job.. but they are now low-balling me. They are offering me $500 less per month than my current job. I will also lose my saved up vacation form my current job (3 wks). I tried to negotiate but they wouldn't budge. They have arrogantly justified that this is what I am worth (even though I was there for years and did the job very well). Now they are pressuring me to decide... and I don't know what to do. I live in a big city and $500 is a great deal of money to my existence here. I am very upset and feel like they are taking advantage...but I don't want to make a bad choice. what should I do?

  • Answer:

If you think you will regret taking the job, then don't do it. Since you are so hesitant, I think you don't really want to take it. And $500 is a lot of money. If you can't live with the pay cut, don't do it.

research the market average for your profession in your area and counter with that

There may be a difference in what you are paid without benefits and what you are paid with benefits. Paying you less than you make at another company is not low balling you

keep the job you have at least long enough to use your vacation up i would not go back to the first job because it sounds like they dont really want you back there are other jobs with benefits these people dont sound like they respect you or you are not importand to them it is thier loss not yours

times are tough. You sound like you are a jumper. That is why they are offering you low wage. Actually yes....they send out the offer letter and then they give the applicant exactly 2-3 days to decide mainly because they must have someone to fill your shoes if you decline the offer. Since you already have this bad feeling - think if you went and said yes. Do you think it would effect how you work?! I say yes. do to human nature tendencies. Actually it is your choise. It's there budget. If you took the job. Ask them the if you got rid of health care would they raise the salary at all? Otherwise, the way you write already told me the answer before I decided to type this...? Hmmmmm.
