Who checks the online job applications for a job?

I called in a fast food place (McDonalds) to the manager and asked them if they were hiring, which they were, but the manager said she doesn't check the applications and that I HAVE to wait for a call back. The application is online only. So, who checks the applications for people that want a job? Or was she just lying?
