How to become fluent (almost fluent) in French?

Should I quit my job or will I become fluent in French?

  • PLEASE READ, its not that long. I just moved to France about a month ago with the intention of learning the language and DEFO be fluent. I took a job that was applied in England as an au pair, they advertised the position for 6 months. THEY DIDN'T TELL ME that they wanted me to speak English to the mother and smaller children (2 and 3) whom I am with the majority of the time. The 2 older children (6 and 8) hardly speak to me and if they if they don't understand me they don't seem to have patience. The mother wants to speak English fluently for work, her husband is fluent in French and English and (out of politeness) speaks to me in English, but to be honest I only see him for about 30mins throughout the day. I watch French TV and listen to the family speak in French when they do. I also read the children's books. I'm starting to feel like there is NO POINT IN ME BEING HERE. I'm not here to help them around the house/with their kids, that is not my main motivation in being here. I can stay a year, BUT, WILL IT BE WORTH IT? Can I become fluent in a year without speaking much French Had they told me I would be speaking English, not so sure I would have come over in the first place. The mother says that it is 'my problem', and that I should spend Sunday's with them (my only day off), which to me means FREE LABOUR. What should I do?

  • Answer:

i think you should think about is the language really going to benefit you in your future, do you plan on using French in your daily routine once you leave France? I think if you want to study, you should being studying A.S.A.P and not working. you're being paid to work at the moment, not study. if you are young, I'd definitely advise studying as it may be something you regret doing when you grow older. Meanwhile, you can't disrupt what your employers want, you're either fine with their demands, or i think you should come back home.
