How to list references for interview?

Why ask for references if they haven't checked them?

  • I had a really good Skype interview a week ago today. I spoke with the EIC and his assistant, he said that he liked my personality, that he "wanted to pursue this," and then asked for a list of references afterwards. I sent him a list a few hours afterwards to which he thanked me for on Monday (4 days ago). I know for a fact that my references still haven't been called which I guess isn't that big of a deal because I know how busy he is and that they have a huge project to plan for in a month, but I had another interview a few months ago where references were asked for but then never called and I didn't get the job. Granted, that was for a retail position and I know the industry is completely different, but I can't help but feel worried. I plan on following up with him on Monday if I still haven't heard anything by then, but I was just curious to hear some insight on what could be the hold up or if I have any cause to worry. Thanks!

  • Answer:

they usually just ask for references as a formality. if they suspect anything they'll have the references to check you out but if they really think you're a great guy they won't care. there are many reasons why you wouldnt get a job but if they don't check your references then that was probably not the reason they didn't hire you unless one of your references was a really bad one. like if you were a hooker or something. but otherwise your references have nothing to do with it
