How can I make this career change - Marketing/Admin to Fine Arts?

Help! I am having a problem in choosing my career?

  • I have a strange predicament that requires expert advice. Before elucidating on the problem, I have to share a brief history. I have taken the commerce stream in class 11 and before starting the class discussed my aim of becoming a Chartered Accountant (C.A.) with my parents. They were extremely delighted because of the payroll and respect in that particular field. However, during my course in the 11th standard, I have generated a strange love toward a particular subject. English. Shakespeare intrigues me and so does Shelly, Yeats and Wordsworth. However, my parents have set up lofty dreams regarding my career as a C.A. They discuss about my studies and advise me to study vigorously as it is a tough course. I have hinted them on my change in career plans but they seem to disregard it. They have spread my career plans among my relatives who praise my audacity to take up the difficult course. To make matters worse, I'm quite good at accounts and math making my parents happier. It is becoming extremely difficult for me to impress on my parents and relatives my present career plans. I even discussed the matter with one of my favorite sister-in-law, trying to gain someone in my team, who was appalled and, surprisingly, advised me to get rid of the ridiculous idea. English, being considered a subject in the Arts stream, is wrongly portrayed as a resort for the weak. In India, studying English is looked down by the society. It would surely break my parents if I tell about my change of plans. My family is financially unstable and they expect me to get a good job and bring them out of the present financial problem. I am confused about the job prospects (and payroll) in the English (English Literature and Language field) that, if bought into limelight, could make them alter their vision. I intend to become a novelist and poet in future and I want to explore the language more profoundly. However, explaining parents about this specific aims would make me a laughing stock. Eliminating humor, I want to progress slowly and steadily to my ultimate dream. But somehow, my high marks in class exams and my parents’ aspirations are plaguing my mind. I can't concentrate on my works as strange thoughts accumulate and contaminate my mind. Please help!!!

I think you would be foolish to give up a lucrative career for English. Becoming a successful novelist is rare and difficult, and often something people dream about. Very few make it. In your place, I would do the CA, get a comfortable life and do English as a hobby/part time. You could do a degree with something like the Open University or similar and study from home in ur spare time. Basically, get a good career and money in the bank. If ur good at English/ novels then it should be natural so you wouldn't necessarily need a degree in English to be a successful author. I know many people who did a degree in English and haven't been able to find work with it...

Suffer the short term humiliation so that you can find long-term satisfaction in your life. It is just not worth it to spend your life doing something for the money that does not deeply satisfy what you want to do. So keep learning about yourself and what you want to do. You may disappoint others around you, but they don't have to walk around in your shoes and go to the job you may hate every day.

I haven't read the whole of you posting but I get the drift of it. Here is a list of online tests that help you to choose what careers are likely to be best suited to your likes and abilities. http://quiz.ivillage.co.uk/uk_work/tests%E2%80%A6 http://similarminds.com/career.html http://www.careertest.net/ http://www.careerpath.com/ http://www.alec.co.uk/free-career-assess%E2%80%A6 Don't worry about Country of origin but go through the tests and see what suggestions they throw up, I would have gone in a completely different route had I done them when young. About 20 years ago I became aware of a whole world I only vaguely knew about namely advertising, it was well paid respectable and right up my street, but I carried on doing what I knew. When I did 1 of these tests about 3 years ago its top job suggestion for me was Advertising copywriter, many years too late. I didn't even know there was such a job when I left school!!!!!! Nothing is written in stone, there is good money in lots of jobs, with accounting personally I would look at your handwriting, to see if it is neat and tidy, I worked with a bloke 2 years ago who was studying Accounting I would not have taken him on, as he had a lack of attention to detail and his hand writing was atrocious (like mine) but he was doing it because his family thought it was a respectable position, he was from Somalia, In Blighty people tend not to worry if something is respectable, only whether it will pay the motrgage, Politician anyone LOL. It is, but that doesn't make everyone good accountants
