What career path should I go down?
-
I just turned 18, hard knock life, been living on my own for a while now no help from parents...I am a self taught graphic designer; that can go big if I play my cards right, this can lead me to owning my own business. BUT something tells me that I can do better, I took a course on psychology last semester, and it intrigued me. I was thinking of doing something in that field now...maybe sociology? What path should I go down and what classes should I take in college. The hardest part about this is my GPA is low...2.4 I messed up in high school, havn't taken my SAT yet either...just lost on a career path.

Answer:
Well, since psychology intrigued you, go into that. Make it your goal to be a psychologist or psychiatrist. They make damn good money!

As a career counsellor, with over 40 years in the field, I will say this.... 1. Follow your heart, for you really need PASSION in your job. 2. Take some career exams that might enlighten you as to your real interests (realize though that you can skew the leanings unless honestly answered) 3. TAKE THE SATs.... you are not prepared for ANY College without them. 4. Always have two avenues you can go....get training in both..they can overlap at some point in your life or you can flip from one to the other. 5. Do not listen to college counsellors, they do NOT have a clue about what it is really like in the outside world. Without a degree, your MARKETABILITY drops dramatically. Yeah, you can earn a living, but it is clearly more difficult. 6. Get your corporate experience in early to see if you can hack it in that very political environment of dog eat dog. If not, then go an entrepeneur route and hook up with a Mentor type person that will take you under their wing and teach you a business. READ Boods on the Subjects of careers.
Take your S.A.T's and be prepared to go to school for longer than 4 years if you go into psychology. One career path to consider is law enforcement. There will always be work available and some psychology is involved. Keep your background clean and follow your interests. You have a long work time ahead so go where you enjoy the work.
