How does one get a job in accounting?

I have a auditing job but am very unhappy - don't know what to do?

  • I am a recent accounting graduate I wanted to work in one of the Big 4 organisations in the auditing field, but I failed to get a position with them I finally did manage to secure a job elsewhere which does provide me with good auditing experience But for some reason I am just unhappy Everyday I dream about what working in the Big 4 would be like I feel so depressed when I realise that I'm missing out a great learning experience Every time I think of my current job I just see how terrible it is compared to the Big 4 I can imagine in a few years that all the grads who worked at the Big 4 will have great experience and knowledge and will be able to get all the good high paying jobs But my organisation does not provide that same level of experience and I seem to be left behind All I want to do is work in the Big 4 but they do not want me I know that I should not be complaining that I have a job, but I am just so unhappy that it is not providing the same quality experience that the Big 4 are providing What should I do? Should I just keep working and hide my unhappiness and hope that one day I will work for the Big 4?

I have your answer... but, I have no guarantees. If the Big 4 don't want you, there's a reason. But you left that part out. I'm guessing it's grades. If you seriously want to be reconsidered, you have 2 choices: get an MBA degree with good grades. or sit for and pass the CPA exam. With either or both of those, you will be re-evaluated. You may not hook up with a Big 4, but trust me, that's not the end of the world. PS auditing at a Big 4 also sucks. So, expect it if you really have to have that

you have to change the things u can, but accept things that u cannot change. the fact that u couldnt get into the big 4 is mostly because of your grades, and partly because of your past summer work experiences, or u dont have enough extra curricular activites, or because the way u talk or look. Big 4 is not as rosy as it seems to be. It has more deadlines, and has lots of pressure with competing co-workers, and a junior may only see the trees but not the forest, although they deal with rich and big clients. Working for a small firm allows u to have a complete understanding of a client's accounting and business operations: payroll, receivables, payables, taxes, etc. I knew classmates in big 4 who spent weeks just to do accounts receivable confirmation for a big client. the past is past, and there is nothing u can change. you may get into big 4 if you get into mba and get good grades, but there is no guarantee. Or, get good grades in your accounting exams, and they may hire u. yes, enjoy what u have and make the best out of it.

I know what you mean. I studied Biomedical Computing and ended up working in a small private company in the medical imaging industry instead of hospitals etc. I heard from accounting friends that working in the big 4 in the first year you pretty much look at Excel sheets. Nothing exciting and long working hours. In a small company you can get promoted faster, the training might not be bad. I mean you are not specialized in one area, you can try different areas in accounting since you have more work to do since there is lack of manpower compared to a big company where you have so many employees.
