What does a graphic designer do?

I want to be a graphic designer when I grow up, it's pretty much the only thing I want to do. I want to plan ahead of time, and I want to learn what it takes to be a good graphic designer. At the moment, I'm making forum signatures, but I'm pretty sure that's not what a graphic designer does. So yeah, what do they do?

Schools are full with students doing this and employers don't have that much demand. Careful with this degree.
