Calling back after applying for a job?

I applied for 11 different positions so I could have a second job this summer because I'm broke. I applied to half on Tuesday and the other half on Wednesday. One I'm really interested in is Staples, where a friend of mine works. Is it too early to call back and ask if my application was received and being reviewed? I applied there on Wednesday morning, online. Every job I've ever had, I've been hired on the spot while inquiring.. so job applications are new to me.

Get the name of who you should contact from your friend at staples and call them after a few days and just mention you had applied on (give date) and were following up to see if it had been reviewed or was the position still available, etc.
