How to a job interview?

How to handle a job interview?

  • When I first applied for this job, i didn't really think i'll make it because it's a big and good one, and i just wrote those open-end questions hastily, sparing no time to rephrase and change small words for big ones..etc. didn't even proof-read...just da da da what i really think...answering questions on how to handle a situation without even reviewing to see if there are loopholes. that got me a phone interview (maybe they phone interview everyone anyway, or maybe it's just my credentials that stood out). did the phone interview in the same spirit, thinking ah i'll just speak my mind. didn't hear from them for almost a month got a phone call for a 1st round interview now. i'm pretty sure there's a 2nd round interview for this co. Well...problem is suddenly i feel afraid. i feel like i WANT this job now, and it's somewhat in my grasp. it's like i lost the zen-samurai fearlessness thingy and i'm going to battle (interview) worried about my inadequacies, worried i might blow it by not presenting the best i can...etc. I'm trying to research all sorts of things and think of a way to give the good standard and desired answers. And maybe this is a good thing, maybe i just got lucky with my nonsense attitude prior, but one thing is for sure... I don't feel confident anymore. I suddenly see myself as some begging whining dog wanting the position. How do you handle this? what should i do?

  • Answer:

I tell my candidates that a face to face interview is not an interview. It is a meeting between equals. They have something you want (a great job). You have something they need (great skills and training). The objective meeting is to get a business deal arranged. Treat it as a meeting, and NEVER refer to it as an interview in you r mind.

Get drunk before the interview. Just kidding. This technique really helps: First, recognise it is NOT the end of the world if you don't get this job. Then visualise meeting with the interviewer again and again, and most importantly focus on hearing the words "when can you start?". Remember that many candidates are chosen before the face to face interview - you came across brilliantly on the phone and it seems you will be required to use the telephone to speak to customers/clients etc. That is very important to remember. I think you have the job in the bag already by the way, you're just nervous and that can be a good thing because it will make you perform better in the interview. Interviewers always account for nerves before the interview begins. You can break the ice by saying "I'm a little nervous because I really want this job" and the interviewer will reassure you. Good luck!
