What are some jobs in the writing field?

Jobs in the writing field for a 17 year old?

  • I'm 17 and my life is writing. I'm flat broke, about to graduate, and am in dire need of a job. Writing is all I do and I really want to find a job that has to do with writing. I have no experience really, other than the two books I wrote, but they haven't been published. I would love to write for a magazine or anything really. I just need something that doesn't require much experience so any info would be a major help. Thank you!!

As you'll learn about the real world, you can't just jump into a career. You have to work your way from the bottom up, get interships via college, or go to college or tech school to get your foot in the door. It's not what you want to hear, but it's the truth. It sounds like it might be too late to start working on your high schools year book or newspaper/journal. You won't get any internships because you're not going to college yet. Unfortunately, life is hard for people with only a high school diploma. It really is. I know people who dropped out of high school and some who got their GED and many who didn't go to college. Life isn't that easy - even when you have a college degree, and I have two! It looks like you need to focus on getting whatever job you can. You're old enough to get a job right now. Is there are reason why you haven't? Life is hard and you say your grandparents can use the extra money, so I'm wondering why you're not working, yet? If you feel writing is your calling, then get a full time job when you graduate - I went to high school with some kids who worked full-time while in high school... - and continue writing your novels and honing your writing skill in your free time. Most novelists have a primary job and write on the side, so you'll be in good company. Can your guidance counselor help you get an internship at a newspaper or local magazine? - I dont know if it's too late since you're about to graduate, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Good luck.

Read Stephen King's "On Writing" if you haven't already. You might also pick up a "Writer's Market" which is a catalog of publications to send your stuff to. You can also send excerpts of your books to magazines that pay per word. Be prepared for plenty of criticism and rejection. Writing is a terribly competitive sport. If you need a job now, then go get a job now. Just because you flip burgers doesn't mean you can't write when you get home. It takes time to establish a reputation and earn an income by writing.

first make a name for yourself. put your name out there on a blog or online presence. that way you can develop a portfolio to showcase your abilities. then consider writing for a periodical or other publication online so that transportation is not an issue. you won't start out making much money. i would strongly consider having a different "job" job for some basic income and develping the writing bit by bit to present yourself strongly. volunteer writing for a nonprofit! it will give you experience, a space on the resume, and great networking.
