Does the accounting field have a national or global code of ethics?

Career change - How difficult would it be to get a job in the acounting field?

  • I graduated over 11 years ago with a BS in Accounting. I have spent the last eleven years working in the IT environment and quite frankly would love to get back into the accounting field. I have many years of experience in the field of tax preparation but besides that all my professional years have been spent writing programming code. Will I need to go back to school to get an MBA and CPA to get the necessary skills for this type of career change? Or will my background in IT be relevant in trying to get a job in accounting?

  • Answer:

A solid career background in IT will get you in the door, but you will be entry level. The CPA is really where's it at, and you will need to pass the CPA exam and have 2,000 hours accounting experience. (at least in my state-NJ. Most states have an experience requirement, ALL have the exam requirement). Tax prep is a start, but you will still need hours clocked in audit and bookkeeping. AND the TEST, don't forget the TEST!!
