Have I accepted the right job?
-
I got fired from my job last month, which was selling very high value conference sponsorship. Although the sales were coming in, the company made the decision that they wanted more so cast me out which I was sorely disappointed about. I have now been offered two jobs which is great as I never thought I would get offered another one! One is for an established local company replacing someone who left (so it's an existing role) where I will inherit some accounts as well as be charged with bringing in new business. The salary is less than I was on before but about equal to almost everything else out there at the moment, with the added benefit of being very close to home so minimal travel costs The second is very similar to the job I was dismissed from, both in job role and high salary and this alone has made me nervous. This was added to in interview when they said 100% of targets were expected to be achieved in order to pass probation, and it was a pure new business role on events that they haven't even defined what they will be yet. I have made the decision to accept the first job as I don't feel confident that I can do the second one after being sacked this year, and if it happens again there is no way I will get another job. However, they keep on phoning me trying to persuade me to change my mind and trying to reassure me which they didn't manage to do a good job of in interview hence me turning it down! I think I have made the right decision, but would appreciate an objective viewpoint! Thank you

Answer:
Unless they stated that their goal to achieve 100% targets was complete hogwash, then yes, you absolutely made the right decision. I understand high standards, believe me, I do...but 100% is a bit, (OK it's much more than a bit!!) unrealistic. Who wants to set himself up for failure? 100%?? Insanity!

It sounds like the second job isn't well defined and they don't really know what they are getting into. Achieving 100% of a target is only feasible if the target is set realistically. Targets can only be set realistically from historical information (either from that company or from experience that the person had). You might be successful in it but you would need to work with them to bring your experience so that you make sure the targets are realistic. You probably have a good idea of your success rate and what industry averages are- I know when I was selling, in my industry, the average was that for every three proposals, most people would sell one (on average) and that if I did better than that, then I was doing well. . If you help them define the role more clearly, then you might be successful. If you don't want to work to do that, then you are right, walk away.
