Is it a must to get a national insurance number in order to find a job in the United Kingdom? (1) i want to find a waitress, or sales lady job (part time only, the wages i earn will not be high), i dont want to bother to do interview at job centre (government office) to get an national insurance number, is it a must to get that number? (2) if i dont have the number, is it illegal to work in the uk? (3) if i dont have the number, will any employer hire me? (4) what are the differences between having an national insurance number and without? (5) if i dont mind paying more tax and have no tax allowance, is it ok not to get a number? (5B) what is an emergency tax ? (6) someone told me if no number, the tax office would assume i have to pay tax even i only earn the minimum wage, is it correct? they say something like''''''''less than annual salary of 5000 pounds no need to pay tax..............--i have no clue about what it is. (7) if i tell the employer my wage is too low , so no need to pay tax, i should initially claim the overpaid tax to the tax office (cos my wage is too low and no need to pay tax , less than 5000 pounds) in next year???????? (11) what personal details would the job centre keep in their computer record ? is it confidential and would not give to other parties even other government departments? If you are not and illegal immigrant, then you should have been given this info at point of entry. Go to your local CAB as I am sure they will address your issues. Who has the time to go through everything you wrote..

Its why we have so many illegal workers because the dodgy employers don't ask for one. Everyone who wants to work in the UK must have a National Insurance number. To obtain a National Insurance number you must be 16 or over and resident in Great Britain or Northern Ireland. You can start work without one but you must then apply immediately. THE LAW requires you to apply for a number if you do not already have one and you are working or are intending to work.

In the UK, it is illegal for an employer to employ anyone without a National Insurance number, so if you could get anyone to put you on payroll, it would be dodgy. It is sometimes accepted that employment can commence after NI number applied for but not received. The purpose of a National Insurance number is to track contributions deducted from you, so it can be ascertained what state pension and benefits to which you are entitled. It is also used as your personal reference number for tax purposes. This applies to everyone working here, of whatever nationality. You do not have a choice about it, or whether or not you pay tax. The British tax year goes from 6th April to 5th April. For this tax year, the tax free allowance is £6035. As an EU member, you would probably be entitled to this, but you would have to establish residency status (form P86). Emergency tax is 20% after an annual allowance of £6035, but on a week or month 1 basis, each payday taken in isolation. As a foreigner, you may be put on code BR, where 20% of all earnings may be taken in tax, before your residency established. Tax is deducted by your employer under the PAYE system. It is unlikely you will have to do a Tax Return. You ask about refunds. Tax office will need to know your complete employment history for a year before any refund (forms P86, P91) They will also need to know what you have done from 6th April to job commencement before issuing cumulative code number (form P91). Suggested website www.hmrc.gov.uk, look at employment or PAYE. I do not know answers re passport/employers, or about Jobcentre. No Government Department will give any personal information about you to anyone else. That is covered by Official Secrets and Data Protection Acts. I could not answer question by question, as some queries overlap, and others are not appropriate or are not applicable. When starting job, employer will ask you to sign form P46 to say that is your only or main job, That will show National Insurance number, name, address, and relevant boxes you have ticked in relation to your circumstances. That is the only information he will give tax office, and completing the form is all you have to do, unless tax office come back asking for more information. I suggest you also do forms P91 and P86, which you can either download, or get from tax office.. You can always call at a HMRC enquiry centre for more information.
