Negotiation: Current Salary Higher than Range offered?
-
I am currently interviewing for a job where the salary is 20,000 lower than what I make now. I really want to work for the company and I am willing to make somewhat of a sacrifice. BUT NOT 20,000 because I will not be able to sustain myself. I need advice to have them offer me more than what their salary range is that was listed online for the position. We have not discussed salary just yet. I do not want them to turn me down because I am asking for what I truly believe I deserve. Can someone (a recruiter) please help me with how I should approach the situation? I do not want to lose this opportunity.

Answer:
You need to be able to sell yourself to the company and justify why you deserve to get a much higher salary then they are expecting to pay for the position. Talk up your years of experience, your successes and everything else that makes you a valuable commodity to the company. Be open to accepting a lower salary, but sign an offer that includes a performance based bonus schedule that would bring you up to where you want to be salary-wise. This would show the company that you are willing to make a sacrifice up front, but you know that your performance will show a value added to the company.

what THEY are offering is totally irrelevant to what yo are making now. obviously the position is lower level, so if you are offered the job and want it you are going to have to take that pay cut - no way are they going to add $20,000 to the salary why would you want to take an obvious step DOWN in status? they will probably have no problem finding someone to work for what they are offering - lots of unemployed people out there and people making LESS than that what you think you "deserve" makes no difference to anyone else - stay where you are at and keep making that money
that is a tough situation to be in. I hate to tell you this, but given that much delta in salary, you are not going to get a lateral salary offer. Let them make the first offer. The person that makes the first offer is in a weaker position. know the minimum salary you will accept, and if they don't at least meet that, then you need to walk away from the job
