Can I go to college and be an EMT at the same time?

Why do people go to college when it's clearly a waste of time?

  • If I could turn back time, I would have never gone to college. College for me meant 4 years of lost income since I was not working, it also means student loans I have to pay back. I'm 29 years old, I got my degree 6 years ago, and every single job I've had since I could've just as easily gotten it with just my High School degree. I know way too many college graduates in the same situation. At least, it not as bad as the many people I know with an MBA who work for minimum wage. Some people I know think it's a good idea to earn a Master's degree since their bachelor's has not helped them in any way. I always discourage people and tell them to look at all the unemployed people with an MBA who have never gotten a decent paying job. I feel it's my responsibility to discourage young people to go to college. I tell them how they'll only end up in debt, and it'll make no difference in job options. I tell if they want to make good money they should get real skils that will pay up at a community college such as electrician, mechanic or nurse. Why do people INSIST on going to college when it's clearly a waste of time?

  • Answer:

College isn't for everybody. Like an idiot, I gone to a for profit trade school twice and I took Computer Networking which is supposed to be a high demand field, but it's not for those with Associates degrees and/or vocational diplomas, A+ certification, qualifications, no experience, etc. I only ended up with student loan debt to the tune of $13K, and no job at the end of both career programs. There are Technology jobs where I live but they want a Bachelors in Computer Science which is the minimum degree required by employers. To employers, an Associates degree and career diploma is seen as worthless like having a high school diploma. I'm attending a local public university full time and working on my Bachelors degree in Computer Science. Yes, at almost 28 years old, but there's nothing else I can do. I can't find one IT position with my Associates degree or career diploma and I have been trying to get IT positions since 2007. It's hopeless. I might as well be a high school grad trying to get an IT position. If I do find an IT job that does require an Associates, they also require six months experience which is hard to get if no one won't take a chance on me. The university I'm attending, it's very well known and recognized by employers. They help their grads and alumni find positions. That for profit school I went to twice, they don't help their grads and alumni find jobs. They only care about money.

Funny, I got a business degree 6 years ago, as well. I have had very high paying jobs ever since that I would have NEVER got with only a high school degree. In fact, I have even had one Fortune 50 company steal me away with a $50k signing bonus from my prior employer just last year. What high school job offers that?!?!? My debt was paid off in 5 years. I have a $750k house, a 7-Series BMW. I now make about $125k per year, before bonuses or options. Yeah, but your right.....any moron with only a high school education can achieve that!!

It's different for everyone. I myself love college and it's opening my mind and what I want to do specifically NEEDS a college education. If people ask me I say it's great to go, but I always add the codicil that it's not always for everyone. Most people that don't get jobs with their degree likely didn't get the degree they truly wanted or were interested in. I know that college was right for me because I left for a few years and once I got back it felt right. If you didn't think it was helping, you probably should've taken a break and reaccessed your situation. So the truth is that not everyone insists on college. If you want to be a mechanic then a trade school is perfectly fine. There are plenty of successful people that haven't gone to college at all. It's just like everything else, it's a matter of personal preference.

I don't believe that college is for everyone; however, if no one went, then no one would have the skills necessary to do more specialized tasks. I'm going for Computer Science Information and Security Assurance...that's not really stuff you can just google and teach yourself. And not everyone has to get student loans. I'm on scholarships and have a part-time job while I'm doing 16 credit hours. I'm looking at getting a full-time job next semester. It's just all personal opinion. But ultimately, all of our decisions to go to college and such are what makes us who we are.
