Job interview that's very hard to get to? What would you do?
-
So, yay, I got a job interview! But my problem is that initially, the job ad was for a position in a place I could easily get to by public transportation. In the phone interview, the interviewer clarified that the address in the ad was a mistake and the job would be at a completely diff. address. This is presenting a problem. Before people come in here and yell 'be happy you got an interview blah blah blah', no buses go to the 2nd address. No trains. Nothing. I could take the nearest train and be dropped off 60 minutes from the building. I actually would be willing to suck it up and just walk from there in my black skirt suit in 99 degree weather, but I am concerned about the future if I get the job. I do not have a car because I can't afford it until December, and none of my friends, obviously, have cars I can borrow regularly (plus, that would be weird for them and me). I could take a taxi for the interview, but again, that doesn't address the problem if I get the job. Any advice would be appreciated. I think I should contact the interviewer and let her know that it would not be convenient. I wouldn't have applied to the position if I knew it'd be almost 2 hours away. Grrr. I feel upset because it sounded like a good fit for me.

Answer:
you should definatly call the interviewer back and ask if the interview address is where the job is too, perhaps if you got the job you would be working from the address on the ad, but if not - i dont think it is worth it to work so far away, especially commuting that far during winter weather. if you explain this to the lady im sure they would understand since they misprinted the address on the advertisement

Is it the kind of job that would allow you to work from home? Some many companies these days have flexible work options. If they allowed you to only come into the office one day a week; I know that does not address the problem completely, but it at least makes things somewhat easier on you. Don't pass up the interview for something like a transportation issue. You never know what can come out of it. Maybe they really like you, but you aren't the right fit, but you are a good fit for another job in the company at the location you prefer. Also, if you do get the job and there isn't a flexible work option explain that to the company. You would be surprised what companies do for applicants they really like.
