Salary question on a job application?

"desired salary" question on job application?

  • On the online job application, it asks what my desired salary would be. I research the position and it says the minimum is $13.40/hr, the mid point is $15.90, and the max is $20.80. In terms of my qualifications- my skills are on par, but my level of experience has JUST made the requested number of years. Should I be asking for anything higher than $13.40? I think somewhere between $14 and $15 and hour would be more reasonable....or would that be jeopardizing my chances?

  • Answer:

Do you have to enter it? Cant you just say negotiable? I would suggest not putting in what you expect unless you absolutely have too. You dont want to go too high but you dont want to sell yourself short. Seriously leave it blank if you can. Those numbers can weed you out very quickly. Best interviews ive had, and ive done many, They question will always come up. How much are my looking to make, whats your expectations. Your best answer is I will take the minimum for this job for 1 month. Lets decide my salary after that. If you prove yourself in that time you will get alot more, and it gives the company an out if you suck. One thing is your employer is not going to spend a month on your development and go find somebody else. It cost too much. But to your question again, leave it blank if you can. Good luck

Forget putting down a number on where it says desired salary. To get an interview and the job it's better to say "negoiable" That way you aren't saying a necessary figure cause the hardest part about that is putting a too low of a number to make your worth look pathetic and a too high of a number that makes you look arrogant. So instead say negoiable.

I would leave that line blank. THis way you can get in there and see what they are looking to pay. When they ask you the question, ask them how much they are offering for the position. In other words , try to see what they are wanting to pay. If it's to low, then tell them that you would love the position but you need to make $--.-- to take it.

If you say your desired salary is the minimum, and they like you, guess what they'll be paying you. Very good! I'd ask for $14.50. If they like you, they may say so but that your price is too high, which opens the possibility of negotiating something more than $13.40.

put $14-16/hr - convert it to annual salary (hrly age x 2080 work hrs in a year)

I'd do a dollar more than your previous job - assuming that is in the 13.40 - 20.80 range.

Ask for more then you think you deserve to give yourself bargaining room.
