I really don't know what i'm going to do with my life if i don't get into University next year. I need advice?
-
I'm 23 at the moment and i have decided to go University next year, but i'm really unsure whether i will get into University next year because of my qualifications and lack of experience. There are only a couple of institutions that have the degree that i am looking for and if i don't get into either, i don't know what i will do with my life! At the moment i'm stuck working a call centre job and it is really mind numbingly boring and repetitive, and i just want to study for something i enjoy. I am just really unsure about whether i will get accepted next year or not and i don't know what else i can do to guarantee me a place. I guess i'll just have to apply and wait it out with fingers crossed!

Answer:
i've just quit my job in a mind numbing call centre to go to uni, an i'm 30, but i have to do an access course to get a place, which i start a week on monday, either find info on the uni websites or ring their student services to find out entry requirements then if you don't fit them, do an access course, don't give up, you'll get there if it's what you really want

Have you checked if they offer courses at the Open Univeristy in a similar subject to the one you want to pursue? Or the obvious answer if you are not qualified to a level to get you into university, do the qualifications required to get into university. If university is what you really want, take part time A levels and study very very hard.

If you own a degree - or any extra qualification - then you'll already be ahead of the crowd when it comes to searching for professions. My pal has a degree and he wasn't certain what direction to go with it, but he uncovered some great tips on the website in the resource box below which guided him to settle that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is loads of help on the website regarding extra professions.
But Richard, there's so much more to YOU than Univerisity or a dead-end job. Think for just a moment about the rest of your life. Think of the different facets of your personality, your moods, your loves, your friends, your immediate circle of supportive people who care about you, what you enjoy eating, where you like to visit, whether your car is working properly or not, and if you do not have a car, unhook that 12-speed bicycle from its hook in the garage, inflate the tires and go for a ride. My point is: you are focusing on just one item too much. It is sometimes called obsessing, and I understand why. It is because it is so important to you for it to go right for you. That said, try to integrate the rest of your life around the things which are really important to you. You are wisely advised to find diversity in your life experience. It is only one University. It is only one dead-end job which you can change for a better one if you will just keep looking. At 23 years old, I was mountain climbing, riding my 12-speed Fuji Del Rey touring bicycle (which I still have at 67 years old now) running my own photography studio in Portland, Maine, learning classical ballet and developing an interest in classical music. I grant you it is not getting a driver's license or running a 26-mile marathon foot race, but it kept me busy and I did not get stuck thinking about just one thing all the time. You need to step back from your frustration with schooling for just a little bit and give some quality time just to YOU. This is all about you. This is not being selfish. You have to take time for yourself if you are ever to care for others. Your quality of life as an adult later in life will depend upon all the interests you have right now, so add a few new ones. Travel? Sea kayaking? (I have been told it's only about nine miles out to the Isle of Wight, one-way.) Can you begin to see what I am telling you? All these other things are going on simultaneously with your frustration over two items which are up close and personal. We always need balance. In a nutshell, I am telling you to stir some other ingredients into the mix. Make a phone call. Text a friend. Have something for lunch you have never tried before. Cuisine from India, for example. Perhaps some vegetarian Chinese dish. Go for a four-mile walk and walk briskly to rid your body of all those toxins of negative thinking. Clear your head by flooding your brain with changing scenery. When you are out walking, your brain is constantly flooded with new images and it helps you get a better balance between the difficult things and the things which are going pretty well in your life right now. If you want to feel something definitely good and positive, go wrap your arms around a tree and feel its strength. Trees are grounded and strong and if you are sensitive and get quiet in your mind, you will feel yourself becoming grounded, too. This will increase your personal energy and help you bring more imagination to the unknowns in your life. I hope my answer is helping you quicken your outlook and brighten your expectations and not limit yourself any longer to a University or a job. You are so much more than that. You are intelligent, imaginative, creative and alert to everything around you and you need to begin feeding that fine mind of yours with a million new things to help overcome the doldrums of orbital obsession.
