How can I get a web design job in Toronto?

I have a shoplifting record, will it be hard to get a web design job in 2 years?

  • Will my shoplifting record making it difficult for me to get a job in web design after I finish my schooling and get my degree?

  • Answer:

A record will make getting many jobs difficult. Getting a web design job is not easy now since there are so many tech and art schools churning out "almost qualified" grads who are willing to work for less than WalMart wages, and so much web design work is now outsourced overseas. So it will be hard whether you have a criminal record or not. That said, I don't think a shoplifting record will make much of a difference in your job search. I have never known any of my employers in the past to do a background check and I have not done any background checks - yet (I had one recent applicant who really made me suspicious and I may run a check just out of curiosity to see if my instincts were right). So learn everything you can - in and out of school, don't get arrested again and you may be OK.

Yes it will, in general. But it depends on whether it is a felony or misdemeanor. And not all jobs will ask about a misdemeanor record; some only ask for felony convictions.

Maybe. how long ago was the shoplifting? Some employers will understand that people make stupid mistakes as kids, but some employers are very strict and won't hire a former criminal.
