Can I move out of state and still collect unemployment insurance?

Can I continue to collect unemployment if I move to another state?

  • I am looking at relocating to another state and was wondering if I can still collect unemployment while I look for work in the other state/

  • Answer:

Workers who are qualified for unemployment insurance benefits and move to another state are still qualified to collect benefits even after they move. This is because every state participates in the federal Interstate Benefit Payment Plan. However, it is necessary to follow the proper procedures to qualify for benefits and receive payments in a timely manner. Be sure to provide accurate information, especially address and telephone information, to prevent unnecessary delays in collecting benefits. You will also need to search for work in the state you move to. Depending on the unemployment rate in the new state you may or may not qualify for state and federal extended benefits.

Hi Jean: It depends on the state, how long you are there, etc. The best thing to do is get your driver's license changed right away and your social security card. And check out the Welfare places in the area if you are in dire need of funds. Again, depending on the state, that differs. Why not throw your resume up on the internet in the area that you want to live in? If you are seriously looking for work, you could have appointments before moving. AND you can write off the move as a business expense on your taxes if you play your cards right! Good Luck! Momma Kat

Generally yes, as long as you continue to look for work in your new location.
