Do you think that a crime like petty theft can keep a person from getting a job?

  • I'm curious to know. I have a relative whom 20 years ago did this from a local store. They didn't go to jail or serve time. It's was like a slap on the wrist so to speak. Now years later, they have had some jobs, but can't seem to get one now. What does they need to do to get a job? They have been looking off and on. Do you think that they're criminal past is the cause of not getting any job offers or hired right off. They haven't been in any trouble since then. This is their first and only offense. I'm trying to help then, but don't know how. I want only serous and helpful advice to pass on to my relative. No jokes or criticism is needed in helpful replies or answers please.

    If it is on their background check, depending on the job, it may keep him from getting a job. If its not on a background check, do not disclose.

I sincerely doubt it. Twenty years ago there weren't large data bases, so the info wasn't stored on one. I doubt they went back and manually put it on one later since there was no reason to for petty theft. Also EEOC would consider it a violation by now to still use it in a job consideration since it was twenty years ago. Probably just the economy or maybe he's not qualified when so many better qualified people are out of work??

But having a record for petty theft is a big issue. And because there is an issue of trust. an employer would think seriously before employing someone who has been involved in theft. As they may steal from customers,collegues and the business but everyone deserves a second chance.
